Untangle adds high availability to NG Firewall for SMB

Untangle, Inc., a network software and appliance company, today launched version 10.1 of its Next Generation Firewall software, a critical upgrade for disaster recovery support for small and medium businesses. Untangle NG Firewall Version 10.1 is available as a free download from Untangle's website. Current Untangle customers will be able to upgrade seamlessly at no charge.

"Even small and medium businesses need to ensure business continuity and plan for disaster recovery," said Bob Walters, CEO of Untangle. "They simply can't afford any downtime because of their slim operating margins. Version 10.1 makes it easy for busy network admins to deploy Untangle NG Firewall in high availability scenarios, while enjoying the benefits of our try-before you buy approach."

With this release, Untangle NG Firewall now provides high availability via virtual router redundancy protocol (VRRP). It allows organizations to deploy multiple Untangle servers as hot or cold backups, and in the event of a system failure, one of the backup servers will take over. Network users will continue to have uninterrupted access to the Internet, minimizing the impact of an outage.

Version 10.1 includes a new, faster installation process. Previously, customers had to download and install individual applications and packages to deploy them on the Untangle NG Firewall Platform. As of version 10.1, all applications are pre-loaded, greatly speeding and streamlining installation. This change also makes backup and recovery a quicker, simpler process.

In addition to numerous bug fixes and small improvements, version 10.1 provides an update to Application Control. Ninety-four new application signatures have been added, as well as improved Skype handling, a notoriously difficult application to control. Untangle NG Firewall now effectively identifies and controls Skype sessions via its Integrated Rules Engine (IRE).
