STAPLES Canada has collected more than
638,000 used ink and toner cartridges as part of their Million Cartridge
Challenge, and is appealing to Canadians to help surpass their goal of
collecting a million by April 22, 2009.

“The challenge was put forth to Canadians on September 24 and we have
received an overwhelming response. We have re-routed more than half-a-million
cartridges from landfills. I’m happy to see Canadians taking action,” said
STAPLES Canada President, Steve Matyas.

The campaign, generated through the Recycle For Education program which
donates $1.00 from every cartridge collected back to participating schools, is
well on the way to its goal of one million ink and toner cartridges by Earth
Day, 2009. “We thank everyone for their support and encourage people to keep
dropping off their cartridges to help not only the environment, but our
schools as well. It just goes to show how important the environment is to
Canadians,” continued Matyas. For more information, please visit

It takes 400 to 1,000 years for one ink/toner cartridge to decompose in a
landfill site. Used ink/toner cartridges can be dropped into bins provided
inside any STAPLES store in Canada. The Million Cartridge Challenge will wrap
up on Earth Day – April 22, 2009.
