Oracle today announced the general availability of Oracle Rdb 7.2, adding support for HP OpenVMS on HP Integrity servers to provide organizations with more choice and to make it easier for customers running mission-critical applications on HP AlphaServer systems to transition to HP Integrity servers based on the Intel Itanium 2 processor.

More than 2,000 global customers count on Oracle Rdb’s high availability, superior performance and security to run their applications. In this new release, Oracle Rdb, the company’s full-featured database designed specifically for applications running on HP’s OpenVMS platforms, provides the flexibility to support the full range of certified HP Integrity server configurations from a single-processor HP Integrity rx1620 server to a 16-processor HP Integrity Superdome within a standalone or clustered environment. Oracle Rdb 7.2 significantly simplifies the process for transitioning from Oracle Rdb-based applications running on HP AlphaServer systems to HP Integrity servers, eliminating the need for all-or-nothing transitions and providing businesses with the ability to shift to lower cost, industry standard hardware.

“For decades, our customers have relied on Oracle Rdb to support large-scale production applications and high-performance transaction processing on HP OpenVMS systems,” said Steve Hagan, vice president, Server Technologies, Oracle. “The latest release extends the quality and stability for which Oracle Rdb is known, while providing customers with more choice and the flexibility to easily move to lower cost systems.”

“We are delighted that Oracle has strengthened its commitment to OpenVMS on HP Integrity servers,” said Ann McQuaid, general manager of OpenVMS at HP. “We are extremely pleased about our continued long-term relationship, delivering some of the industry’s most robust, available and secure solutions to support the dynamic and critical needs of customers.”

Additional Enhancements in Oracle Rdb 7.2

In addition to HP OpenVMS on HP Integrity server support, Oracle Rdb 7.2 adds a number of new features including the following:

— Increased maximum number of database global buffers to reduce the I/O
requirement;

— Increased maximum database page and buffer size limits to retrieve and
store more information with a single I/O;,

— Additional statistics screens and larger counter sizes to ease
monitoring;

— Streamlined internal instruction sequences for more efficient CPU use;

— Improved caching of database AIP entry information for reduced I/O;

— Index node pre-fetch performance optimizations to reduce I/O stall
time;

— Transaction rollback performance optimizations to reduce rollback time;

— Encrypted database and after-image journal backups for protection of
confidential data; and,

— Query Optimizer enhancements for more efficient query execution
strategies.
