Nintendo has announced plans to launch a slimmer edition of Wii later this year.

This new model would be cheaper but would lack support for games originally made for their GameCube console.

The company said that the older model would be discontinued once this new edition is launched for sale in the market.

Nintendo has announced a Family Edition of Wii that would be launched at Christmas. It would come with the new version of the Wii along with a Wii Remote Plus controller, nunchuk sub-controller and copies of Wii Sports and Wii Party.

Nintendo is already scheduled to launch their next generation console Wii U sometime next year.
