Unisys Corporation today unveiled three new ES7000 servers featuring the latest Intel® Itanium® 2 processor. The new ES7000 servers include the ES7000/460, the industry’s only hybrid system supporting both the Itanium 2 processor and the Intel Xeon™ processor MP in the same rack-mounted unit.

The new ES7000 servers provide customers who wish to standardize their operating environment on Microsoft Windows, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with twice the processing capacity and memory previously available from Itanium 2-based Unisys ES7000 servers. Constant ES7000 innovation, along with improvements to processor technology and software applications, creates an increasingly attractive alternative for mission-critical solutions – solutions that were previously dependent upon expensive RISC-based systems.

The new ES7000 servers also include new Sentinel management software enhancements and migration tools that allow customers to move to high-end, cost effective systems built on standardized technology. Sentinel also allows customers to manage and consolidate multiple applications, including SQL and Oracle databases.

“Unisys technology combined with the new Intel Itanium 2 processors is an important new addition to the market segment, providing what customers want – a high-performance environment at an economical price,” said Richard Dracott, general manager, enterprise marketing and planning, Intel. “Unisys has packaged all their enterprise expertise to greatly simplify migration. The new ES7000 models and software make it easier for customers to adopt Itanium 2-based platforms, further enabling customers to transition from proprietary RISC-based computing.”

ES7000/460: Blended Architecture
The new ES7000/460, the industry’s first hybrid server featuring the Intel Itanium 9M processor, cuts costs and increases efficiency by allowing customers to take advantage of the performance and scalability of Itanium 2. It includes up to 32 Xeon MP and 16 Itanium 2 processors, for a total of 48 processors. The server runs 32-bit and 64-bit applications natively – providing faster access to information and a smooth transition to enterprise-wide Itanium 2-based computing.  The ES700/460 is also uniquely suited for deploying multi-tier enterprise-class solutions such as SAP, PeopleSoft, and Siebel where 32-bit enterprise applications and 64-bit databases can be quickly implemented and economically managed together.

Unisys Sentinel: Enabling the Intel Enterprise
Unisys is also unveiling enhancements to its database management software, Application Sentinel for SQL Server. Application Sentinel for SQL Server 2.0 with 64-bit support provides real time diagnostic and optimization capabilities that can improve throughput by over 40 percent, while reducing response time by 20 percent and reducing processor utilization by 25 percent. Release 2.0, available on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows partitions of ES7000 or ClearPath Plus Servers, also enhances the performance of business intelligence applications by including new support for OLAP implementations and trend analysis.

“Unisys has been a leader in bringing Intel-based computing to the enterprise,” said Chander Khanna, vice president, Systems & Technology, Unisys.  “Constant innovation in the Unisys labs allows us to deliver new platforms and management software that address the greatest concern of IT managers and business directors alike – better performance at a lower cost.”

Unisys 64-bit platforms are attracting customers eager to benefit from a move to standardized systems.  New customers around the world adopting the ES7000 platform include MGM MIRAGE, Beazer Homes, Pennsylvania State University and Rayovac Corporation.

The new ES7000 servers complete the Unisys 64-bit ES7000 offering, which now includes 4-, 8-, 16- and 32-processor models. All models are available immediately with the latest Intel Itanium 2 processors, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, as well as Sentinel management enhancements.  U.S. pricing for ES7000 servers with Itanium 2 starts at $39,500.
