More 3D Channels on the Way

Remember when we reported on DirecTV’s 3D channel around the turn of the year? Well, it has company. Discovery, Sony, and IMAX have announced that they too will launch a 3D venture, as will ESPN.

Discovery, Sony, and IMAX are billing the 24-7 network as the first one in the U.S. Discovery Communications will distribute the network and provide sales and tech support. Sony will presumably contribute both content and technology. The venture will also benefit from IMAX’s 25 years of experience with 3D. Content will include natural history, space, exploration, adventure, engineering, science, technology, movie, and children’s programming. See press release.

In addition, ESPN will also go 3D with its own network, reports USA Today. It will kick off with World Cup soccer on June 11.

More details about the DirecTV channel surfaced at CES last week. Panasonic is partnering with the satellite operator, providing production gear and promotional support. Their channel will also be 24-7. It’s slated to start up in June.
