Maxtor Corporation announced today the availability of the newest additions to its Atlas® family of enterprise-class hard drives, the Atlas 10K V and Atlas 15K II drives. The drives are designed to a 1.4 million hour MTTF (mean time to failure) reliability rating and include new MaxAdapt® adaptive features, with twice the storage capacity of their predecessors.
“We are pleased to offer our customers a broad base of high-performance 3.5-inch SCSI drives,” said Brendan Collins, vice president of product marketing at Maxtor. “Our latest Atlas products are shipping today with the Ultra320 SCSI interface and we plan to offer drives with a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface next quarter. Maxtor is committed to providing both 10,000 and 15,000 RPM, 3.5-inch enterprise-class drives with Ultra320 SCSI and SAS interfaces to support customers’ current and future system designs.”
“There will continue to be a demand for 3.5-inch enterprise drives in the server market due to the current installed base and proven system designs,” said David Reinsel, program director, storage research at IDC. “By maintaining the 3.5-inch configuration, Maxtor’s Atlas product line-up allows system vendors to leverage legacy design architectures while introducing a new technology to the market, such as the SAS interface.”
The Atlas 10K V drive features capacities of 73, 147 and 300GB and a 10,000 RPM rotational speed. The drive offers a maximum sustained transfer rate of 89MB/sec and average seek times as fast as 4.0ms and includes an 8MB ECC protected cache. The Atlas 15K II drive features capacities of 36, 73 and 147GB and a 15,000 RPM rotational speed. The drive offers a maximum sustained transfer rate of 98MB/sec and average seek times as fast as 3.0ms and includes an 8MB ECC protected cache. Maxtor Atlas drives are the only enterprise hard disk drives in the market equipped with MaxAdapt intelligent technology, which allows the drives to adapt to changing system conditions to maintain optimal system performance.
The Atlas 10K V and Atlas 15K II drives are currently shipping with the U320 SCSI interface. Product availability of SAS models is scheduled for the first quarter of 2005. A SAS system architecture will allow Atlas SAS drives to be integrated with Serial ATA (SATA) drives such as Maxtor MaXLine™ SATA drives in the same system. This Serial in a Box™ storage architecture provides flexibility and scalability in one enclosure that can serve as a universal building block for constructing a data center’s storage infrastructure.
