Distributel Communications Limited (Distributel), a leading national provider of voice and data services for Canadians, announced the acquisition of new west coast telecom operations, taking another important step in its strategy to consolidate alternative telecom companies.
“Distributel is focused on consolidation in order to create a strong, competitive telecom choice for all Canadians,” says Matt Stein, CEO of Distributel. “The acquisition of selected assets of TNW is critical because it gives Distributel a substantial presence in Western Canada and new west coast network assets.”
In November 2016, 8640025 Canada Inc. (dba “Teliphone Navigata-Westel Communications”) filed for court protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (“CCAA”) in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Ernst & Young Inc. was appointed as Monitor and was also directed to manage the business. On September 25, the Monitor closed on an agreement for Distributel to acquire selected assets of TNW and take over associated operations, ensuring that the ongoing delivery of services will continue seamlessly for customers.
“This asset acquisition is good news for TNW customers,” adds Stein. “With the strength of the Distributel organization, we will provide much needed stability to ensure the continuation of operations and will invest the financial and human resources to grow the newly combined business.” The company operates under a new, wholly owned subsidiary of Distributel named Navigata Communications Limited.
Stein, who is also the Vice-Chairman and National Spokesperson for the Canadian Network Operators Consortium Inc. (CNOC), has championed a series of progressive changes for Distributel since joining the company in 2014 as CEO.
Under his direction, Distributel has acquired Yak Communications from Globalive Capital; expanded the Distributel Internet footprint in Quebec and Ontario; introduced Zazeen TV to the Distributel portfolio of services; forged a deeper partnership with Microsoft, and, orchestrated a series of key hires from both within and outside the industry, positioning Distributel for continued strong growth in the Canadian marketplace.
