Dell today announced a comprehensive database
offering featuring Dell’s most powerful quad-socket POWEREDGE servers with
new Intel Xeon dual-core technology and the new MicrosoftSQL Server
database.

The complete offering provides customers a one-stop-shop for simplified
migration to the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database environment.
Debora Jensen, vice president, Dell Canada Advanced Systems Group, noted
the importance of helping customers simplify data center operations by
providing a fully supported ecosystem for business-critical database
applications.
“Customers can now more efficiently migrate their critical data with a
complete database solution,” said Jensen. “Dell can provide a direct, single
point of contact for customers’ complete enterprise database needs, from
hardware and software to services and storage with great performance today and
headroom for future growth.”

Featuring dual-core Intel Xeon processors, the new servers can deliver up
to a 51 percent performance increase in compute-intensive workloads(1). These
servers will enable even greater performance gains when combined with an
800 MHz front side bus expected to be available early next year.

The new servers also compliment Dell’s recently announced
price/performance record – being the first vendor to break the $1/tpmC barrier
with its PowerEdge 2800 dual-core server(2). Compute-intensive database
applications such as 64-bit Microsoft SQL Server 2005 can achieve improved
performance by using more memory in the servers and running multiple
concurrent processes.

The Dell PowerEdge 6800 and 6850 servers are also ideal for customers
concerned about balancing performance demands with power consumption. The dual-
core processors can increase the total performance per watt of these PowerEdge
servers by up to 43 percent(3). In addition, whether single-core or dual-core,
PowerEdge 6800 and 6850 servers maintain a common system image and are
backward compatible so customers can easily manage and update all of their
systems.

Dell has made it easier than ever for customers to migrate to Microsoft’s
new SQL Server 2005 database with a comprehensive offering of servers,
storage, systems management, service and support. Dell is the only major
systems vendor selected by Microsoft to offer SQL Server 2005 directly to
customers, either pre-packaged on Dell PowerEdge servers or via existing
licensing agreements.

Dell’s simplified systems management approach and unique integration with
industry standard management tools such as Microsoft Systems Management Server
2003 and Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 provides the capability to update
server software, operating systems, and applications such as Microsoft SQL
Server 2005 from a single console.

Ongoing technical support designed to meet customers’ needs helps ensure
availability and provide appropriate levels of support once the technology is
up and running. In addition, Dell’s SQL Server 2005 sizing tool can create
full configuration recommendations of the optimal combination of Dell
offerings based on specific customer database requirements.
