CertainSafe, a global provider of secure file-sharing solutions, today announced it is being featured in October Research's recent "Cyber Security" report, a detailed look at the threats facing today's title and settlement companies as they strive to protect consumers' nonpublic personal information with the limited resources many have available.

October Research is the nation's leading provider of market intelligence, industry news and regulatory information for professionals in the real estate, settlement services and mortgage industries. With the threat of a cyber-security breach seemingly daily, October Research sought industry experts to compile its comprehensive report. CertainSafe's contribution focused on protecting data at rest and email encryption.  Specific topics include:

* The importance of securing your data at rest
* Steps to safeguard escrow accounts
* Technology to help prevent fraud, embezzlement, defalcation and errors
* Establishing network controls to protect nonpublic personal information
* State and federal regulatory actions
* Plus, a cautionary tale of what can happen when necessary steps to secure systems and information are not taken

Everyone is aware of cyber threats and has taken steps to make their networks and systems more secure, but CertainSafe Executive Vice President Steve Russo claims many organizations overlook an important aspect of cybersecurity. Russo's whitepaper, "Email Encryption: A Trojan Horse Waiting to Strike" is excerpted in the report, where he noted, "Over time, we have learned that securing sensitive and confidential communication, data exchanges and information that travels through emailing is a complicated challenge. By default, email is not encrypted as it travels across networks and maneuvers its way through the Internet."

According to Russo, the goal is to stop exploitations from happening. However, tactics such as end-to-end encryption can also expose the user to a "Trojan horse" vulnerability. "It only protects data in transit," Russo wrote. "Communication containing sensitive information that requires protection against unwarranted disclosure due to legal reasons, issues pertaining to personal privacy or proprietary considerations, must be secure not only while in transit but at rest as well."

Russo's comments are the launch point from which CertainSafe's solutions are based, including its proprietary MicroEncryption/MicroTokenization™ technology, which prevents bulk data breaches by protecting each individual file all the way down to the byte level.
