Datalink, an independent information storage architect, today published a new white paper entitled, “Enterprise Backup and Recovery Methodologies for Oracle.”
Written by Ari Kaplan, senior consultant at Datalink and president of the Independent Oracle Users Group, the white paper evaluates the pros and cons of Oracle’s own backup and recovery applications and compares a number of third-party enterprise backup and recovery solutions for Oracle-based environments. While most companies understand that it is important to have a solid enterprise backup plan in place for all corporate information assets, the requirements are especially stringent for database applications, and the options vary greatly based on needs.
“Business requirements demand that organizations be able to recover database environments in a timely and successful manner,” said Kaplan. “Data loss or the inability to quickly recover data could cause severe financial repercussions for a company and its customers and partners.”
According to the white paper, companies seeking to minimize the threats of data loss and slow recovery times must evaluate how frequently database data needs to be backed up as well as identify the maximum amount of down time they could endure before a specific table or entire datacenter was restored to a live state.
Additionally, before implementing any solution, companies must factor the total cost of ownership and evaluate the overall management complexity.
Kaplan recommends that, “Because of the complexities involved in developing a well-designed backup and recovery architecture for an Oracle environment, it is important to be knowledgeable about the alternatives available and understand the various benefits and drawbacks of each option.
