Canada Post readies for record-breaking holiday volumes

The holidays are here, and with roughly 80 per cent of Canadians now shopping online, it's poised to be another record-breaking season. Delivering nearly two out of every three online orders, Canada Post expects to see double-digit e-commerce parcel volume growth in November and December. Only Santa will deliver more than Canada Post.

Throughout the holiday season, the company estimates it will deliver:

  • seven million more packages compared with 2015
  • one million packages a day on 26 days, compared with 16 such days in 2015
  • one million packages a day for 16 days in a row
  • more than three million parcels on Sundays alone

December 12 is forecasted to be the busiest day of the year for delivery agents and retail stores across the country, with an anticipated 3,500 parcels delivered each minute.

The Canada Post and the holidays by the numbers infographic provides more predictions and insights.

To help Canadians prepare for and enjoy the holidays, Canada Post is extending retail hours and will begin delivering on the weekends in major urban centres, starting in Toronto November 13 and elsewhere on November 27.

The Canada Post Mom Squad
This year, Canada Post is offering more advice and insight to make the holidays a little easier. Six busy moms, called the Canada Post Mom Squad, will be offering behind-the-scene glimpses of our operations, talking about online shopping, featuring gift ideas from retailers and sharing holiday shopping tips – both online and traditional. They all have young kids and work at Canada Post in various departments. You can find the latest Mom Squad activities on Canada Post's social media channels and at canadapost.ca/magazine. They are also available for interviews.

The Mom Squad members are:
