2015 Reseller Choice Awards Winners!

The 9th Annual Reseller Choice Awards marked the dawn of a new era as the next generation of IT companies took some of the top spots, challenging all of the big brands. All together, we handed out 86 awards. Congratulations to all the winners. It was a great opportunity for all nominees to celebrate with their channel team for a job well done.700X400awardspic

All of the finalists should also take great pride in their outstanding channel performance; being on this exclusive list means that the channel believes you are doing a great job. When vendors and distributors improve their performance, the entire channel wins!

Datto was the big winner this year, scooping up eight awards including Best Overall Vendor. The relatively new company recently reached a market valuation of one billion. It also demonstrates that companies that decide to be 100% channel-focused can be very successful, if they are doing the right way.

Cloud related companies were always gaining ground in the awards survey, but this year was sort of a tipping point. Over 80 companies were nominated in the cloud space as the channel demonstrated its strong support with their votes.

The channel seems to be looking for the next generation of technology solutions to fuel their growth. Other companies including Storagecraft, Veeam,  Sophos, N-Able, Connectwise and Autotask did very well. Veeam has been showing a significant increase this year and may be a company to watch in 2016. RapidFire recently entered the Canadian market and already won the best IT assessment tool and best new vendor.

Tech Data won for best Broad-Based Distributor for the 9th consecutive year – an amazing achievement. Their team continues to be very strong. While most distributors saw their voting numbers increase, so did Tech Data as they kept their lead. Synnex took one of the distributors awards in Best Availability and Delivery, demonstrating that the channel recognizes and rewards excellence in every distributor. Synnex was second in the overall best distributor category with Bluestar taking the third spot, displacing Ingram to fourth. Interwork was third in Best Customer Service. Ingram’s best placement this year was third spot for Best Product Support.

All distributors provide a vital role in the supply of hardware. Hopefully this annual report card helps all distributors to improve their support of the channel in the coming year.

On the specialty distributor side, Bluestar was the winner and Interwork the runner up. These two companies continue to battle for the top spot in this category, but in a way they are both the best as they do not compete in the same space. Bluestar is in the POS sector and Interwork in the Security space. Bluestar is also gaining enough support in the channel to start competing with broad-based distributors – for example winning the second spot in Best Terms and Conditions and taking the third place from Ingram.

All of the major players took home multiple awards including Microsoft, HP, Cisco and Lenovo. HP also regained some of the ground that it had lost to Lenovo in the past few years. With the new two-company HP, we will see what happens this year. Epson also dominated the projector category, widening the gap between all of its competitors.

HP

HP remained at the top for servers and all of the printer categories! Cisco took most of the networking categories only losing in a few areas to HP. We are seeing a lot more voting for 3D printing than previous year. It may be a sign that 3D printing is starting to accelerate in the channel. Xerox, Lexmark and Brother continue to swap places in the second and third places. Epson maintained their second place in the ink-jet printer category.

HP won the top spot for Managed Print with Xerox in second and Lexmark moving up to the third spot. This market is still cloudy as the channel tries to get it right in the managed print business. It seems like the successful channel partners are exploiting this market from a print compliance angle first, before building out a full managed print business practice.

DELL also moved up in votes, but just not enough to clench any top spot this year. Dell tied with QNAP for second place in best storage vendor with Lenovo coming in third.

Lenovo

Lenovo was last year’s top winner, but slipped this year as HP regained some of the lost ground. The gap between the voting number is closing. That said, Lenovo held on to most of the computer systems categories to end the year with a great performance. DELL is also gaining more ground and so is ASUS, although to a lesser degree. We think that the computer systems category will heat up in 2016 as they all rally to grow market share.

Microsoft won for Best Software Vendor, with the two new vendors coming in second and third – Datto and Veeam. Microsoft also won Best Infrastructure as a Service, Best Cloud Services and Best Business Intelligence and CRM as well as a few other categories. Microsoft is pushing and pulling the channel towards the Cloud – some willingly, some kicking and screaming.

Tablets this year was Apple (first), Microsoft and then Lenovo compared to last year Lenovo (first), Apple and Samsung. Microsoft made the biggest gains this year in tablets and seems to be poised to take the top spot in 2016.

VMware

Virtualization continued to be dominated by VMWare with Microsoft and Citrix in second and third respectively. This sector is poised for growth as more managed service providers add desktop-as-a-service to their portfolio. We also see some lesser-known vendors growing in this category.

Schneider Electric continues to win the Power Back up and Data-Centre Rack categories but is being challenged by companies like Eaton and Hammond Manufacturing as they close the gap. It is great to see healthy rivalry still exists in a world where consolidation continues to eat away at the spirit of the competition.

Intuit moved into the top spot in financial software, moving ahead of Sage and Microsoft. There were many other vendors in this category reflecting the diversity of what the channel is using and selling.  Intuit seems to be the #1 installed software that the channel is using to run their business but they are not reselling the solution. It is an interesting dilemma in the channel as they are well educated about the Quickbooks, yet there is not enough incentive for them to resell it.

The Cloud Storage category was won by Datto, closely followed by Barracuda and Microsoft. Datto also won Best Disaster and Recovery with StorageCraft in a very close second and Intronis coming in third. We expect to see this category heat up in 2016 as the number of nominees more than doubled from the previous year!

Security was another category with some major changes as Trend Micro tied with Malwarebytes for the top spot in Anti-Spam. Barracuda moved into second and Sophos third as they displaced last year’s winners Intel Security and WatchGuard. Sophos also jumped into the top spot as Best Security Vendor but was not in the top three spots from last year, pushing out ESET, WatchGuard, Kaspersky and Intel Security. Trend Micro and Fortinet moved into the second and third spots respectively. As security moves up on the must-do list in 2016, we expect that more vendors will be rallying for the positions.  We will be doing deeper surveys into this Security and Cloud categories in the coming year as we see a tremendous amount of activity.

Viewsonic won the top spot for professional displays jumping ahead of HP and LG. Samsung, who won last year, did not place in top three. Viewsonic is coming out with a lot more products this year, so we will see, if they can stay ahead of the competition and gain more ground.

Fujitsu has been winning the top spot for Best Mobile Scanner for the past five years as Epson (who came in second), keeps on gaining some ground over the past few years. Fujitsu also won Best Scanner with HP coming in second. Zebra won for best label printer and is getting a lot more votes as they widen the gap between rivals Dymo and Brother. It is always interesting to see the change in voting year over year. Could it be that when vendors reduce their focus on the channel, they get less votes?

Solarwinds/N-Able was the top RMM vendor with Labtech, TeamViewer and LogicNow gaining more votes. As of January 1st, 2016, LogicNow finally became the new official name for GFIMax and MAXFocus. Unfortunately, this change may have been confusing the channel so the voting may have been split. AVG/Level Platforms dropped the most.

A special big THANK YOU to all the VARs, MSPs and ITSPs who took the time to vote and express your opinion this year. The winners of the prizes for voting have been picked…
