They lack the discipline that is necessary to optimize bottom line results. These businesses often have little idea how money is being spent or how things get done. It is vital to any business that there be a level of discipline about how business is conducted. This means that managers must indeed manage rather than blindly going about their business. It is not unreasonable to assume that the number one reason why businesses lack the discipline to optimize profits is a lack of daily management. This does not mean that managers should micro-manage employees. It does mean that they should be well aware of expectations, budgets, market trends, what their employees are doing and anything else that is important to their operation. It also means that they must maintain a focus on the bottom line while trying to optimize productivity of employees.
